Built to be corrected
Survey captain and collection custodian
An inhabited scientific cruiser carries open sensor frames, protected observation instruments, gardens, and collections held on loan. A visibly repaired support remains aligned to a corrected survey rather than the ship’s original plans.
A planetary survey vessel preserved through the Silence and rebuilt as a shared, traveling archive.
Large observation instruments, laboratories, preserved records, and trained field crews support careful long-duration regional surveys.
Leave a margin for the next witness.
Who has the deck
Ilan Sorel, survey captain and collection custodian. An experienced survey pilot who favors a second observation over a confident speech. He coordinates with Aren but owes lenders the terms recorded when their collections came aboard.
The corrected bearing
The middle sensor support has a plainly visible repaired bend. A small original mounting bracket remains beside the newer alignment so the correction can be inspected.
What it cannot do
Exposed instruments need calibration, protection, and quiet observation conditions. The vessel cannot reveal all hidden terrain, recover perfect memories, or bypass another team’s information boundaries.
A tradition aboard
A departing expedition leaves one blank page in its public report. The returning crew invites an outside observer to write the first correction.
Who argues with the captain
Nessa Hale — A specialist invited aboard to represent lenders whose records were lost or rewritten. She values research and refuses the claim that preservation automatically transfers ownership.
Four eras, one hull
A planetary survey cruiser records Veyra’s approaches and weather systems.
An outdated chart causes a frame strike. A local observer’s correction becomes part of the repair record.
Communities lend vulnerable collections to the ship, with return rights recorded alongside descriptions.
A provenance audit uncovers loans treated as permanent holdings and begins returning them.

The Margin Gallery
Original charts and later corrections hang side by side, including mistakes made by the ship’s most respected officers.
The Quiet Lens
A shielded instrument chamber with observation benches and maintenance access to the open sensor frames.
The Returning Rooms
Climate-controlled collection halls where labeled empty cradles record objects returned to their communities.
