Helios Union · Forge carrier and mobile construction yard
Built by the hands it carries
Yard captain
An enormous working foundry organized around a straight industrial keel. Its enclosed furnaces, repair gantries, and unfinished vessels make it a moving record of what the Union can build together.
Assembled from seven voluntarily commissioned yard vessels during the rebuilding generations.
Enclosed furnaces, heavy lifting gear, repair berths, and skilled crews allow major construction work far from a permanent yard.
Nothing useful is finished alone.
Who has the deck
Mara Tern, yard captain. A former crane operator who treats ship command as responsibility for many interdependent crews. She takes Sera’s ambition seriously and makes her account for the time safe work requires.
The unpainted joint
A long replacement section interrupts the keel’s orange finish. Inspection marks remain exposed. No anniversary repaint is permitted to conceal the welds.
What it cannot do
Production consumes delivered material, energy, time, and labor. Heat management and long setup cycles constrain movement; the ship is not a free resource generator.
A tradition aboard
The first completed component of a major commission is passed through every participating crew before installation. It marks shared responsibility rather than a captain’s personal achievement.
Who argues with the captain
Davin Holt — A survivor of the original yard accident who teaches apprentices how to challenge a work order. He also knows that a stop without a recovery plan leaves other crews stranded.
Four eras, one hull
Seven consenting workshops commission their yard vessels into a common mobile foundry.
A rushed keel joint fails during a lifting operation after an otherwise celebrated relief voyage.
Crews fit the exposed replacement segment and establish the witnessed work-stop charter.
A critical new commission tests whether that charter survives pressure from the Union’s own leadership.
Aboard
The Common Press
A working fabrication hall where commissioning crews add their marks beside those of the original seven yards.
The Open Gantry
A sheltered side bay large enough to hold a damaged vessel, with clearly marked work zones and staged assemblies.
The Witness Rail
A walkway along the repaired keel, used for inspections, teaching, and public explanation of stopped work.
